CHAPTER ELEVEN

The cloudless, twilight sky outside rumbled once before stabbing an azure bolt of lightning towards the narrow, open window of the Alfblodseidr’s tower. It smashed into the arrow slit and seemed to bunch up as if trying to squeeze itself through the cramped opening. Only a fraction of that spell’s raw, deafening power, a splintered, thrashing, cat o nine tails branch of energy, managed to shove through that window.

But when it came to the Lady Chal, a fraction was more than enough.

Fractured lightning whipped through the room. The bits that neared the Lady Chal seemed to curve away as if repelled by her skin. Those that remained made no such attempt to avoid the elves who filled the room.

I saw one unlucky bastard take a flicker of lightning across his waist, then scream as his legs spun away trailing sparks. Yet another of the fae took one of those electrical whips to his face, and I didn’t realize how much damage he’d taken until he toppled to the ground with the front of his skull split into two charred pieces. Still more branches of energy lashed across the room, leaving maimed heaps in their wake.

A mitigating spell was already my own on my lips by the time one of those tendrils of raw electricity slashed my way. It was the same bit of ice armor producing magic that I’d used to cut my way out of my airbag crammed Jeep earlier today, that covered my arm, the one nearest to the threat, in a massive, spiked kite shield in less than a heartbeat

The Alfblodseidr moved in the corner of my eye and I glanced over long enough to see that he was making a beeline my way, his eyes wide with concern.

“Wait!” he was shouting, his eyes wide with recognition and finger pointed at my spiked, magical shield.

The Lady Chal’s lash of electricity, one of the last to have not fizzed out, I realized, smashed into my upraised, crystalline shield the next instant. The blow flung me across the room and vaporized half of my shield in one hit.

The rest of the shield exploded exactly as it had been designed to do, sending a directed, retaliatory storm of razor edged shards of ice in the direction of where the attack had come from. At least half a dozen slivers, each as large as my palm, cut into where the Lady Chal still reclined amongst her mound of pillows and blankets.

The rest embedded themselves into the walls and the Alfblodseidr’s men.

If I’d thought that the Lady Chal’s diluted lightning had done some damage, it was nothing in comparison to the carnage I’d wrought. At such a close range, and an enclosed space such as this, my shield’s retaliatory nature may as well have been a shotgun blast fired at an ant hill. Every single one of the Alfblodseidr’s people had been hit at least a dozen times, and the rug strewn stonework was soon stained a brighter shade of red.

“Oh, shit.
